CRAFTS SEWING

Different people have different hobbies that coincide with their tastes – sewing is just one of them.   Some people perform sewing just as a hobby but there are others who sew to make a living but no doubt, they still enjoy the activity.

Sewing is the process of fastening pieces of materials together by using a needle and thread or a sewing machine.  Sewing can be plain or fancy.  Plain sewing is functional as it is used mostly to make or mend clothes.  Fancy sewing is used to decorate fabrics and to create craft items.  Fancy sewing takes in different types of sewing such as embroidery.  The creations that can be arrived at through sewing are endless – From simple items to large, complex creations.

The possibilities are endless as to what can be created by sewing.  If you love to sew and would like to extend your creations from just mending and simple needlework, here are some great sewing crafts that you will enjoy.

  1. Bath Mat – They are widely accessible in simple styles to fancy ones.  The fancy ones are usually expensive but no need to dig in for extra cash.  All you have to do is buy an ordinary bath mat and transform it into a fancy one.  Choose one that has no rubber backing.  Choose a ribbon that will match the mat and starting at one corner, attach the ribbon with fabric glue, each time turning it back on itself to form a pretty design and continue right around to the end.  Stitch right around and use a scissors to cut the end of the ribbon and fold it under neatly.
  2. Satin Jewelry Pouch or Cosmetic Case – create a pouch to protect your jewelry, trinkets or cosmetics while travelling or just storing at home.  Measure whatever size you want the pouch to be and cut two same size pieces of the satin fabric to stitch together to form the pouch.   You may add ribbons, beads or laces to accessorize the pouch when you are finished stitching it together.  Add string in the top to draw and close the pouch.
  3. Bed Banner for a child – you are familiar with your child and knows what she fantasizes about.  Why not make her a bed banner?  You will need 2 straight pieces of bamboo, plain fabric, pieces of coloured fabrics, scissors and yarn.  Cut a square piece of the plain fabric.  Fold over the top end to make a pocket and stitch then do the same with the next end. Insert a bamboo into the pockets at each end.  Cut the coloured fabrics to match what your child dreams about.  If its flowers, cut out flowers of different colours, leaves, a sun and a butterfly or bee. Sew the cut-outs to the fabric to form a pretty picture.  Attach the yarn to both ends of the top bamboo and hang above her bed.
